South African Catholic church rocked by child abuse cases
It has been reported that thirty-five instances of sexual abuse are currently under investigation by the Catholic church in South Africa.
Precious Blood Sister Hermenegild Makoro, the secretary general of the Southern African Catholic Bishop’s Conference, told the Mercury newspaper that the cases relate to priests preying mostly on young boys and are being investigated but none have led to convictions yet.
Makoro added that in cases where complaints against priests had been found credible, they were withdrawn from the ministry.
The church has apparently also drawn up a list of known sex offenders and cases that have been reported and are being dealt with by professional conduct committees.
Pope Francis admitted that the church is dealing with a “monstrous” crisis.
