KZN has run out of driver’s licence cards – you must pay for a temporary licence

According to the Department of Transport, KZN does not have any driver’s licence cards available.  A labour dispute caused a nationwide backlog.  Some motorists have reported waiting up to two months for their cards.

Industrial action that started three months ago at the Driver Licensing Card and Account department in Gauteng has caused a critical backlog nationwide.  All cards are printed at this facility and staff are not allowed to work until they sign their contracts.

The Department of Transport has advised motorists to apply for a temporary drivers licence, which is issued immediately when they renew their cards.  The motorist will pay for the temporary licence.  If a traffic officer stops a motorist without a valid licence, they will be fined.
