Durban police arrested a man that was accused of abduction and rape when he escaped and fell into an elevator shaft in Durban this week.

Durban SAPS explained that the man was arrested and handcuffed by Durban harbour police when he escaped and fled towards Albany Grove – which is near the harbour.

He entered an empty building and ran into an open doorway on the 6th floor, which was in fact an elevator shaft.  He fell roughly 18 metres to his death.

Durban police Search and Rescue set up a rope system to retrieve the accused but was declared dead on the scene.

The investigation into the matter continues.
