Helpful tips to discourage vervet monkeys in your garden
The tips here talk about discouraging monkeys from your garden – but think about how awesome it actually is to have monkeys in your garden – around the world there are many people that would love to experience African wildlife in their own back yard!
Here are some tips for discouraging Vervet monkeys in your garden:
Use a hosepipe to squirt them. They’re not so fond of being hosed and will run away. If they come into or near your house use a water pistol.Simply shoe them away by walking towards them or waving a dishcloth or towel at them. They may stand their ground and threaten you – but don’t be intimidated and they will flee.Vervet monkeys are very fearful of snakes – so many advise placement of realistic looking rubber snakes in the garden – but never leave them in one place for too long – as they will learn to ignore it. Try tying it to a piece of string and moving it when the monkeys come close – and they will flee.Point anything like a gun at a Vervet monkey and they tend to get scared – even cameras often work (but please don’t shoot them with pellet guns – many Vervet monkeys in and around Durban are frequently being injured by people trying to scare them off with pellet guns. Many of these need to be put down because their injuries are so severe)Vervet monkeys are often scared off by dogs – although I have to admit the ones that live near my house don’t seem to care for the dogs – they almost sit there in defiance of them. I have previously had a dog of mine catch a monkey – and she got her ear bitten. Although she got a nasty infection from the bite – she’s well and happy – and more determined than ever to keep the monkeys away from the house!Vervet monkeys tend to be more afraid of men than women – so guys – you need to go and chase the monkeys – not your wives!Make sure your trash bins are covered and preferably have clipped on lids so that the monkeys aren’t able to open them.Use bird netting or similar products to cover your vegetable gardens to keep monkeys away from your vegetables.Keep fruit and veg and bread and anything else edible out of view. If a monkey is in a tree near to your house and they see a ripe bunch of bananas and the window – you are going to have problems… So put them in a cupboard or close the windows.Try and prevent them from gaining access to your house by putting a piece of plastic piping around overhead cables – when they try to grip the wire – and it moves – they will not try the overhead wire.
I choose to just let them come. My dogs generally (but not always) stop them from coming into the house. They spend a lot of time in my garden – eating figs and other fruit from the trees. The dogs bark from the moment they enter the neighbour’s property – until they are completely out of site.
Don’t ever shoot a monkey with a pellet/air gun – they suffer serious injuries from pellet guns! (find out more atwww.monkeyhelpline.co.za)
