Finding Balance in Cloud Cuckoo Land
According to the media, both social and mainstream, we are in a mess; from global warming to the societal malaise of young adults, nothing seems as straight forward as it historically was.
We yearn for the “good old days” and endless summers of our youth whilst bemoaning the manic pace of information driven change. The truth, of course, is somewhat different. We live in an era of unparalleled opportunity, with better resources in everything from medicine to information, than at any other time in recorded history, but how we choose to grow our lives amongst all this wonder is a vital question which few people actually ask.
The choice is simple; if we don’t consciously choose to master modern life it will master us. We need to master the art of simplifying our lives if we want to avoid the maelstrom of stress that many experience today. One obvious example of technology interfering in our lives is the mobile phone. Whilst a boon to those who need instant connections they are, for many people, “Cell” phones in the truest sense; they have a master slave relationship and an unanswered ring is like ignoring a summons from the boss! The addiction to our mobile devices is so extreme that, when asked to do so at the beginning of one of my workshops, many people simply do not know how to switch their phones off. Get into the habit of allowing yourself some technology free time everyday by switching all your devices off – let the internet and technobabble pass you by, just for a couple of hours.
After the panic has subsided you will discover a new world: of conversations- with real people, of romantic dinners, reading, walking, lazing in a bubble bath or simple quiet contemplation.
