Three men brandishing an axe allegedly robbed two teenagers partying in Ballito in the early hours of Tuesday morning, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

The partygoers were in the coastal hamlet for the annual Rage Festival, at which high school pupils celebrate the end of the year.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said an 18-year-old girl and her friend were accosted after a night out, shortly after 03:00.

“She [the victim] was at Ballito, in a parking lot with her friend, when they were accosted by three suspects who threatened them with a knife and axe,” she said.

The three robbers forced the teen and her friend to hand over their valuables, including cash, cellphones and their shoes, before running away.

The teens raised the alarm with a local security company, who notified the police and accompanied the girls to a police station.

“Umhlali police were notified and three suspects, aged between 22 and 25, were apprehended for robbery. They are expected to appear in court soon,” she said.
