At the top of her game
Entrepreneur finalist, business woman and physiotherapist Lianca Dookran has certainly made a name for herself in town.
The successful owner of Assess and Progress-Integrated Therapy has a wealth of industry knowledge, as well as compassion for her fellow man.
She works from Sanhall Park in Ballito as well as the Tiffany’s Centre in Salt Rock and lives in Seatides, having originally been from Springfield, Durban. Her trade, physiotherapy, is anchored in movement sciences and Dookran aims to restore the function of multiple body systems. She is committed to health, lifestyle and quality of life.
Dookran attained her BSC in physiotherapy from UKZN in 2009. 2010 was a humbling year for her, seeing her apply her skills at Montebello Hospital, a rural Hospital within the iLembe district.
“I was exposed to the plight of end stage Aids and amongst smaller attributes to the hospital, I implemented a HIV physical activity programme to introduce the importance of exercising when living with HIV,” she said.
The year 2011 took her into the private sector in Pietermaritzburg, where she attained invaluable experience in cardiothoracic, orthopaedics and neurological conditions within the hospital setting.
“Working weekends, public holidays and call outs, I had new appreciation for the importance of my profession,” she said.
July 2011 brought the opportunity she relishes today. Dookran was offered a position in Ballito to run a start-up practice.
“After a year, in July 2012, I bought the practice and so my journey began. In 2014 I became a Mrs and with that came the drive to push my career further in order to financially plan for a family. I then developed the multidisciplinary centre called Assess and Progress-Integrated Therapy.
“My passion lies in orthopaedics. As a passionate physio my competitive edge is that I focus on hands on evidence based physio using machines only when suitable and necessary, concentrating on the overall experience, one hour sessions, rehabilitation and exercise prescription,” Dookran explains.
At Assess and Progress- Integrated Therapy, Dookran also works with speech therapist Evashnee Reddy and occupational therapist Uvana Sewpersadh.
